We report on a study that defines a variety of intuitive gestures for use in applications geared toward helping children learn. The gestures defined are functional and any device that supports midair gestures can be utilized. In the study, we first analyzed and evaluated previous studies to determine effective gestures that can easily be handled by children. Then, we used a motion sensor to develop ineffective learning application that can be used by elementary school children. Digital methods can reduce distraction and help students to achieve maximum focus in study in order to extend their knowledge. Further, physical participation of teachers and students together can be useful for teaching and imparting knowledge. In this paper, we discuss the development of a sample natural user interface (NUI) for this learning application that includes several intuitive gestures. The gestures allow students to participate in the learning process, thereby enhancing their learning capabilities. The gesture set sample used in this prototype application can be extended to various learning applications that utilize NUI.
